Ideas for Class Project

Just kickin' some ideas around.

first idea.
One idea I have is promoting less device waste through the revival of old music technology. Recently my roommates and I began listening to music on older devices like MP3 players, Sony Walkmans, iPod shuffles, etc. It was cool that we all had this technology laying around and some of us were even planning to get rid of it before we realized that we could get these devices working again pretty easily. The audience for this would honestly be pretty general, but it could serve the project better to perhaps focus on whatever group discards the most electronic waste. Overall the intent of the project would be to persuade people to give old and viable technology a try to produce less waste. For the photo editing project, my housemates and I like vintage fashion so I thought I could depict us in outfits that represent the time that our music technology came out. Maybe the photos could be accompanied by some text that showcases how sustainable use can be stylish. For the illustration project I could use a vintage style of art (ex. 80s neon) to give statistics and information regarding the prevalence of electronic waste for items that may otherwise still function. And for the film editing project, I think it might be interesting to just interview people in unique manner and discuss their relationship with music, or maybe quiz strangers on the names of a bunch of vintage sound technology (ex. boom box, record player, MP3, etc). Either way I think the point of the video would be to inform about the vastness of music technology while also bringing awareness to electronic waste.

second idea.
Another idea would be to somehow formulate a project that marries my love for film and filmmaking with my hobbies of thrifting and sustainability. The intended audience would likely be young filmmakers (anywhere or at UCSB) showcasing how to utilize low-budget thrifting for student projects for props and costuming. The overall intent would be to increase sustainability in filmmaking as well as helping other students reduce budget and save money when making personal projects. This idea would essentially build towards a "proof of concept" film for the film project with both the photo and illustration project serving to somewhat show the process for the filmmaking. For the photo editing project I would probably do some kind of film fashion book that showcases some character outfits with text that show how much the pieces cost. For the illustration project I'd draft up a poster for this hypothetical movie, but the text would also contain information in tips for using low-budget costuming and props. For the film project I think it would be interesting to have a film that is centralized around filmmaking from a documentary perspective, showing the process of sustainability and budget in student projects. I also think a cool idea for the film project would be to create a short film that has a theme of sustainability and reuse.
